Thank you for visiting to read my commentary on what Helotes and Grey Forest have to offer like Old Town and Market Days in Helotes, and vibrant wildlife in Grey Forest.
Although they are different neighborhoods, my family lives in Helotes Park Estates. Helotes Park Estates is a hilly, winding assortment of roads around Cash Mountain, on the north side of Helotes bordering Grey Forrest.
Both small towns are unique.
Helotes is part of Bexar County but is its own municipality. Bisected by Bandera Rd., ample shopping and restaurant locations suit the hungry foodie.
Helotes and Grey Forest Old Town and Market Days
Downtown Helotes is a quant set of boutiques such as Helotes Creek Winery and Wine-101, a trendy wine and tapas bar with a hip interior and fantastic outdoor accommodations.
Downtown “old” Helotes is growing with new businesses such as Busted Sandal Brewery and two small coffee joints.
People note Helotes’ John T Floore Country Store as the best live music venue in the Texas Hill Country, with room for everyone.
On the first Saturday of every month, Helotes hosts Old Town Market Days, where you can find hand-crafted items, and fresh produce, like honey or vegetables.
Leaving Helotes for Bandera, the commanding hillside to the left is San Antonio Ranch.
San Antonio Ranch overlooks Wildhorse Way neighborhood, one of Helotes’ several higher-end neighborhoods.
City of Grey Forest
Grey Forest is a “small – one and a half-mile long community” with tributary roads into the hills, such as Blue Hill Pass.
Home prices in Grey Forest are considerably high, by comparison, due to the community and its stringent growth and commercial policies to protect the environment and lush wildlife in the area.
To that point, my husband and I “GORUCK” with weighted backpacks to keep in shape. During winter, when the sun sets early, we hike with headlamps, and the eyes staring at us from the dark (always deer) highlight the inviting natural element that is Grey Forest.
While far from the city, Grey is close enough for access to Helotes amenities and is a gateway route to Boerne not far away — it is quiet and picturesque with oaks, creeks, and stone “summer house” cottages dating back to the late 1800s.
Its citizens take preservation sincerely, as mentioned, and have funded and developed its 42-acre park, named Madla Park, designed to remain natural, serve as a conservation area, and be home to native plants, birds, and other wildlife.
Although one may say Grey Forest is ‘far removed,’ fine dining quality at the Grey Moss Inn contravenes that position – the food is incredible, diverse, and worth the cost. Their wine selection matches their exquisite food selection, and since spending New Years’ Eve there, I cannot recommend it more than I am here.
